Ask a comparison that matches the intended claim
Waste-management and product questions require different functional units. The JRC study compares alternative management pathways for one tonne of waste oil and reports regeneration as preferable for climate change across its evaluated pathways, while societal-cost results are more context-dependent.
That finding cannot automatically become a carbon-footprint claim for every RRBO or finished lubricant. A finished-product comparison should evaluate equivalent lubricant service, quality and application, not merely equal mass at the factory gate.
- Define whether the question concerns waste treatment, base oil or lubricant service.
- Name the actual comparator and geography.
- Do not extend a pathway result beyond its study boundary.
Build an RRBO-specific inventory and sensitivity record
The inventory should include collection, transport, rejected loads, water and contaminants, pretreatment, process energy, hydrogen or solvents, yield, co-products, residues, emissions control, base-oil finishing, additive blending and delivery.
Electricity mix, data period, geography, allocation or substitution method, feedstock-burden treatment and virgin-oil comparator should be declared. Sensitivity cases should vary assumptions that materially affect the conclusion rather than hiding uncertainty in one result.
- Use measured facility data where available.
- Show allocation and avoided-production assumptions explicitly.
- Test transport, yield, energy and residue-route sensitivities.
Convert results into bounded public claims
A claim sheet should state method and version, functional unit, geography, study period, boundary, comparator, impact category, result range, uncertainty and verification status.
One climate indicator does not justify broad labels such as green, environmentally friendly, zero waste or carbon neutral. Recycled content should be stated separately, and environmental evidence must not imply viscosity, durability, licensing or OEM approval. Comparative public claims may require independent review under applicable market rules.
- Record the exact Environmental Footprint method version.
- State the result as narrowly as the evidence supports.
- Keep lifecycle verification separate from lubricant-performance approval.
