Collection determines the feedstock envelope
Used lubricating oil can contain water, fuel, coolant, solvents, process fluids, wear metals and other contaminants. Their concentration and variability influence storage, pretreatment, re-refining yield, residue management and final base-oil consistency.
A circular system therefore needs defined collection categories, labelled containers, trained generators, documented transport and acceptance testing. Mixing first and testing later is not a quality strategy.
Chain of custody is a technical control
A collection ticket should connect origin, material description, quantity, container, transporter, sampling record and receiving decision. Exceptions and rejected loads need their own disposition record.
Traceability allows a re-refiner to investigate abnormal feedstock, protect compliant suppliers and improve future segregation. It also supports more credible mass-balance and recycled-content claims.
Measure more than litres collected
Collection-rate targets can encourage volume, but a technically mature programme also measures contamination, rejection, recoverable fraction, unplanned residue, spill incidents and verified disposition.
The objective is not merely to move used oil. It is to preserve its highest safe recovery route while preventing pollution and unsafe blending.
